Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of adult vision loss. It is defined as a microvascular disease and characterized by neovascularization. . Neurodegenerative and inflammation components have been recognized in many retinal diseases, and underlie the mechanisms leading to retinal cell death, suboptimal visual acuity and blindness. Νeurodegeneration and inflammation are important targets for retinal therapeutic intervention. The major aim of the present study is to focus on DR therapeutics and investigate the neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory actions of a new target, namely the neurosteroidal microneurotrophins. These molecules are derivatives of the neurosteroid Dehydroepiandrosterone that has been shown to have anti-apoptotic-neuroprotective properties. The postdoctoral fellow’s job is to investigate the anti inflammatory actions of the novel neurosteroidal microneurotrophins, and their effect on microglial-neuronal interactions, in the STZ model of diabetic retinopathy.
