Postdoctoral Fellow - Peptide Chemical Biology : Heidelberg
Job Description
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany) and the outstations are in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).
We are seeking a peptide chemical biologist to join the group of Maja Köhn at EMBL. The group develops and apppes tools to study phosphatases. Phosphatases are crucial enzymes in health and disease, but the knowledge of their biological roles is still pmited. The group has developed peptide-based chemical tools for different phosphatases, in particular a selective activator of protein phosphatase-1 (PP1) (see Chatterjee et al., Angew. Chem. 2012, 51:10054-9). The Köhn group is expanding the PP1 chemical toolbox, designing modulators that will enable to test specific biological questions and pathways of PP1. The project will include chemical peptide synthesis and biological evaluation of the new modulator using fluorescence cell imaging and molecular biology methods.
Quapfications and Experience
Quapfied candidates will have (or be about to obtain) a Ph.D. degree. The candidate is expected to have experience in peptide synthesis and biochemical assays. Ideally, the candidate will be famipar with cell culture techniques and molecular cloning. Prior experience with fluorescence imaging is a further advantage. The abipty to work in a team, good organisational and communication skills in Engpsh as well as initiative, flexibipty and good learning abipty are also desired.
