Candidates must hold a PhD, and/or M.D. degree with experience preferably in the fields of Psychiatry, Neuroscience, Genetics, Psychology, or related field.  Desirable background in postmortem brain research, statistical analysis, molecular biology techniques, mitochondrial function, suicide research, and clinical translational studies. Publications in one or more of these specialized fields are required. Positions are dependent on extramural funding and research contracts of two PI's, Dr. William E. Bunney and Dr. Marquis P. Vawter.  The position is full-time and salary will be based on experience and University guidelines for Postdoctoral Scholar. The candidate for this position will work collaboratively on variety of projects:  postmortem gene expression and genetics, sleep deprivation, circadian, major depression biomarker clinical study, mitochondria functional assays including measures of oxidative respiration in cell lines from patients with psychiatric disorders and effects of psychotropic medications and drugs on mitochondria function. Current projects involve sleep deprivation, circadian, postmortem gene expression and genetics. Experience in any of these fields and interests in these will be essential to working with investigators at UCI in this postdoctoral position. Examples of ongoing projects involve:

• Assays for discovery of novel mtDNA sequence variants, including heteroplasmic variants in brain.
• Genotyping, CNV, and whole genome sequencing of postmortem brains.
• RNA-Seq studies using NGS

• miRNA studies

• Mitochondria functional assays including measures of oxidative respiration in cell lines from patients with psychiatric disorders.

• Effects of psychotropic medications and drugs on mitochondria function.

• Assays for discovery of novel mtDNA sequence variants, including heteroplasmic variants in brain.

• miRNA studies

• Suicide studies using above techniques.
